Nairobi, July 17, 2024 – Acting Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja has banned any planned protests within the downtown Nairobi and its environs up to Thursday.
This follows the escalation of such peaceful demonstrations into violent incidents that have resulted in loss of lives and property destruction with criminal infiltration.
He said the Constitution guarantees the right to assemble, demonstrate and petition others for any cause, but, at the same time, places the National Police Service at the apex as the institution to ensure the security of the country.
The constitution provides for the right to assemble and picket to present petitions to public authorities, but in doing so, it also emphasizes the critical role that NPS plays in maintaining national security, Kanja said.
He rallied members of the public to the need to collaborate with the police in maintaining order within the Nairobi CBD.
It reiterated its commitment to respect for human life even as it tries to put an end to the nationwide protests.
